Southern Exposure

Shalom House Art

Artist Name:
Cindi Kinard
Artist Statement:
This piece was done to show how I was treated as a child growing up in the Deep South. This mask only has one eye to show how grownups didn't try to see what was going on with a child. The mouth is a zipper in order to show that down south it's believed children are to be seen and not heard. I did the work at Shalom House in art class. It will hopefully give others the strength to speak out more with art. I've got PTSD, but I've been doing things better since I started making my artwork.
