Shalom House is committed to involving consumers of mental health in the organization and the services provided to our clients. Art Program- (find out more) Shalom House offers it's clients fine art classes - including drawing, painting, sculpture, and multi-media - throughout the year. Art provides our clients with a creative outlet for their emotions, builds confidence and self-esteem, relieves active symptoms of mental illness, and helps develop commitment and patience.
The following programs are run by Shalom House consumers with help, as necessary from qualified staff. Peer Support- This service provides one-on-one support to clients who need help accessing resources, navigating the city, and seeking out recreation and socialization. Peer support workers, all of whom have experienced mental illness are actively working on their own recovery, and receive extensive training and regular supervision.
Consumer Advisory Council- Shalom House clients meet monthly to act as consultants in improving the programs and services Shalom House offers. They bring their unique views to the table and work on the development of Shalom House by reviewing policies, procedures and plans for growth. Consumer Educators- This community outreach program allows Shalom House residents to share factual information and personal experiences about living with mental illness. Their stories emphasize that with hard work, faith, and support, recovery is possible. Presentations are available to schools and civic groups. Read about Peer Support Worker/Consumer Jeff Daigle's story of recovery. To receive more information about this program or to schedule a presentation, call 207-874-1080. |
